PROGRESS REPORT - October
2007
We were advised on the 23rd
February 2007 that the Waitangi Tribunal Wairarapa ki Tararua District
Inquiry Report has been delayed and is unlikely to be issued until April
2008. We continue to have on going dialogue with Rangitāne
o Wairarapa.
During this year we have met
with Te Pootiririkore, Office of Treaty Settlements (OTS) and Crown Forestry
Rental Trust.
Our current position with Te Pootiririkore is that we would undertake 3
commitments.
We have a commitment to
ongoing hui with the Kahungunu caucus
We reaffirmed our
commitment to the joint negotiation process
We committed to delivering new information to our beneficiaries that was received from OTS
THE CLAIM:
This claim was filed by Manahi Paewai for and on behalf of Rangitāne o Tamaki nui a Rua and its constituent hapū. This claim is supported by the Rangitāne o Tamaki nui a Rua Incroprorated Society.
HISTORIC:
21 Sept. 1990 filed a claim (including a statement of claim) with the Waitangi Tribunal on behalf of Rangitāne o Tamaki nui a Rua.
8 April 1993 filed amended statement of claim with the Tribunal.
1993-2001 period of gathering and collation of traditional historic information related to Rangitāne o Tamaki nui a Rua.
26 April 2001 attended the first Judicial conference in Masterton and requested to have the proposed hearing district boundaries extended to include Tamaki nui a Rua, (Tararua).
8 August 2001 request accepted. Hearing district boundaries extended to include Tamaki nui a Rua (Tararua). Hence, the Wairarapa ki Tararua inquiry boundary was created.
DETAILS OF THE CLAIM:
This claim concerns Rangitāne taonga, in particular the loss of ownership, possession, authority and access to lands, waters, estates and forests within Tamaki nui a Rua. The claim also concerns the loss of identity as tangata whenua of Tamaki nui a Rua.
The Wai 166 claim is a comprehensive claim on behalf of Rangitāne, covering the entire takiwa referred to as the ‘Tararua region’ for Tribunal purposes but known as ‘Tamaki nui a Rua’ by the Claimants.

Rangitāne o Tamaki nui a Rua
Traditional Histories Report
This report was commissioned by the WAI 166 Rangitāne o Tamaki nui a Rua claimants both as a traditional history for tangata whenua and to compliment the document bank being prepared in conjunction with WAI 175 Rangitāne o Wairarapa, for a joint presentation.
The Report, written by Patrick Parsons and Dorothy Ropiha was completed in February 2003, and includes copies of photographs and maps.
Copies are available in a plastic spiral bound form. Cost is: $35.00 Colour Copy / $15.00 Black & White. An additional cost of $5.00 is required for postage & packaging should you wish to have it delivered.
